Decay Fungi of Oaks and Associated Hardwoods for Western Arborists was first published in the Western Arborist Magazine (Winter 2010). The Britton Fund Research and Education Committee selected this paper for their Compendia series. The purpose of this publication is to provide education to a wider audience, and to raise funds for arboricultural research.

This is the second compendium in the series. The committee, recognizing the importance of accurate risk assessment, selected this article for their publication. It is a practical guide to help arborists identify the fruiting bodies of some of the more common wood-decaying pathogens, and to better understand how the disease progresses in each case. This is an important element in tree risk assessment.
